Can You Get the Wegovy Pill on the NHS?
The straight answer as of October 2026: not routinely. The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide for weight management) was MHRA approved in June 2026 and is available privately, but routine NHS prescribing for weight management has not been commissioned. Here is the current position, the process that decides it, and what the realistic options are meanwhile.
The current position
MHRA approval makes a medicine legal to prescribe in the UK. It does not make it NHS-funded. For weight management medicines, routine NHS use generally requires a NICE recommendation followed by NHS commissioning, and access then typically runs through specialist weight management services rather than a standard GP appointment. Injectable Wegovy followed exactly that path and remains available on the NHS only through specialist services with strict eligibility criteria. The tablet has not been through those steps yet. For now you can only get it privately, at the prices tracked across this site.
How a medicine gets to the NHS
Three stages matter. First, MHRA licensing, which the Wegovy pill already has. Second, a NICE appraisal weighing clinical and cost effectiveness, which sets whether the NHS should fund it and for whom. Third, commissioning and rollout, where NHS England and local systems decide how quickly eligible patients can be seen. With injectable weight loss medicines this stage has been phased over years because specialist service capacity is limited. Even a positive NICE outcome for the tablet would likely mean gradual access through the same specialist pathways, prioritised by clinical need.
What to do in the meantime
If you think you may be eligible for NHS weight management support, speak to your GP about a referral to your local specialist weight management service: those services can prescribe funded treatments where criteria are met, and they will know the current local position. If you are thinking of paying privately instead, compare the true monthly cost carefully before committing, because private treatment is ongoing spending: our cost guide sets out realistic first-year totals and the live comparison shows current provider pricing per dose.
Frequently asked questions
Is injectable Wegovy on the NHS?
Yes, but only through specialist NHS weight management services with strict eligibility criteria and limited capacity, not through routine GP prescribing. Access has been phased since 2023.
Will the pill definitely reach the NHS eventually?
Not definitely: it depends on NICE’s assessment of cost effectiveness at the price offered and on NHS commissioning decisions. This page is reviewed as the position develops.
Can my GP prescribe it privately?
Some GP practices offer private prescriptions, and regulated online pharmacies provide the more common private route with a prescriber assessment. Either way it is a private cost, not an NHS one.
Is Foundayo (orforglipron) on the NHS?
No. It was MHRA approved in August 2026 and NICE guidance on it for weight management is expected later. NHS availability before late 2027 looks unlikely. Our sister site Dayo tracks its private prices.
